Agelgle- '"ah-gel-gil' (the 'g' pronounced as in 'go')
(v) – Serve and/or be of service; (n) An Ethiopian basket, hand woven from straws, used for packaging and carrying food for later consumption on the road or at a picnic. It also means pre-packaged meal.
In Ethiopia, it is customary for a household to have one or more hand woven baskets of all sizes for the purpose of packaging food for a long trip, picnic and/or to take food during a visit to a family or friend's house. During the process of packaging,the inside of these baskets will be lined with banana leaves or plastic to seal the food content from seeping into the basket. It is well insulated and keeps the food fresh for days without refrigeration, unless it is extremely hot.
Each ethnic group has its own style of covering and adorning the outside of the basket, and one can tell what region it comes from by observing such unique features.
The base will have several strings made from leather for tying it tightly to the dome shaped cover, which has a loop in the center. It will also have a wide strap for carrying it on the shoulder.
